What are Rebuilding Days?

Rebuilding Days and SheBuilds are the mission behind Rebuilding Together OKC. 

Each spring and fall, we have volunteers, sponsors, and businesses coming together to focus on repairing homes for low-income seniors across Oklahoma County. These are dedicated service days where teams work side-by-side to complete critical safety repairs that allow seniors to continue aging in place in their own homes.

Many low-income seniors struggle to maintain their homes due to financial reasons or physical challenges. We created Rebuild Days and SheBuilds for our women-led groups so we can help them get the home repairs they need, like creating a wheel chair ramp for home access. It’s a great way for businesses looking for corporate team building events to help make a difference in our community.


  • 72-year-old David has lived by himself since his wife died. Bravely battling cancer, David hasn’t been able to address the many repairs his home needed — a leaky roof, damaged ceiling, holes in walls from unfinished plumbing repairs, crumbling bathroom tile, damaged flooring, and peeling exterior paint. This spring we were able to complete these repairs. Now, David can focus on beating cancer instead of being in fear of living in an unsafe home.

  • We help people like Bettye, a 75-year-old retired nurse. Despite suffering from serious health conditions, Bettye helps care for her granddaughter, Chloe, every day. But her home became unsafe and needed serious repairs. During one of our Rebuilding Days, volunteers repaired multiple deteriorating doors, the kitchen countertop, and the kitchen faucet, in addition to repainting and repairing her home’s exterior.

  • One of our safe homeowners is 78-year-old JM. Despite suffering from Parkinson’s, this gentleman makes a difference to his neighbors every day — from being their Spanish translator to helping prep for job interviews to sitting down with them to make sense of paperwork or bills. JM’s home was in dire need of repairs. During one of our Rebuilding Days, volunteers built a ramp, repaired windows, added missing shingles, installed a grab bar, and cleared debris from his property.
    Together, we can ease the burden for those who need it most!
  • After a diving accident, Michael became a quadriplegic. Michael is a dedicated father and homeowner, who has overcome many challenges with a limited income and limited mobility. Rebuilding Together OKC and volunteers helped repair his home after a plumbing incident and roof damage left his home with mold and flooring hazards. Michael often thanks RTOKC staff and volunteers for making his home warm, safe, and dry.
    Make a difference in someone’s life

  • Patti, who uses a walker due to back issues, was living in a home environment with several potential tripping and safety hazards. The entry way to her front door was collapsing and the siding on her home was peeling off. Volunteers worked together to clean, repair, and modify her home to keep Patti living there safely and independently. Patti said that this is the best year of her life thanks to Rebuilding Together OKC.

Our Mission

Repairing homes, revitalizing communities, rebuilding lives.

At Rebuilding Together OKC, our mission is to help as many of our elderly neighbors as possible to live comfortably in their own homes. We offer free home repairs and modifications to low-income homeowners aged 55 and older to ensure they remain in their homes and age independently with dignity. 

By working together with volunteers, donors and caring members of the community, we transform homes and enhance the quality of life for qualifying seniors throughout the Oklahoma City metro. 

Behind the Scenes of Our Rebuilding Days

We plan our Rebuild Days far in advance so we can make the most impact.

After meeting with homeowners and assessing the safety and accessibility issues in their homes, we’ll create a clear scope of work focused on these concerns. From there, teams step in and start repairing homes!

On Rebuild Days, we help make a difference by:

  • Installing a wheel chair ramp for home access
  • Replacing faulty HVAC or plumbing
  • Adding grab bars and handrails for stability
  • Repairing unsafe flooring and reducing tripping hazards
  • Addressing exterior hazards and structural concerns
  • Painting and minor exterior improvements tied to safety

All of this helps improve safety and makes aging in place possible. In many cases, something as simple as a wheel chair ramp for home access can completely transform the way they enter and navigate their home.

How Rebuild Days Began

The concept originally grew from a movement called “Christmas in April” where volunteers would come together on Saturdays in April to complete home repairs for elderly neighbors in need. It was such a success that it continued into May and June…and quickly revealed a much larger need.

As more homeowners asked for help, the original one-month event turned into a year-round program!

Today, Rebuild Days continues that legacy and brings together people focusing on repairing homes, while also creating meaningful connections with other volunteers in the community.

SheBuilds is a special Rebuilding Day designed to get women from all over Oklahoma County civically engaged in their own communities. Women-led and women-focused, SheBuilds provides critical repairs for women-headed households, while also empowering women to maintain safe and healthy homes.

Plus, alongside making a difference in our local community, women find themselves making friends through our supportive SheBuilds community network.
